A backyard swimming pool can serve as a perfect backdrop
for hours of fun at family get-togethers. Sometimes
this fun turns into tragedy as your pool poses a real threat
to children, especially for children under 5. You can prevent
an accidental drowning by being careful and by following
these steps:
Never leave small children unsupervised–even
for a few moments.
Install a fence around the pool area
to keep children from gaining access to the pool and pool
area without your knowledge and supervision.
Keep children away from pool filters, skimmers, and drains
as the suction may cause injury or accidental drowning.
Ensure all pool users know how to swim. Beginners should
be supervised and accompanied by a good swimmer.
Never swim alone or allow others to swim alone.
Be sure to remove all toys, floats, and balls from the pool
area as these only serve to increase a child’s attraction
to the pool.
Take extra caution to ensure that no
glass bottles or containers are ever used near the pool area
in order to prevent potential hazards.
Keep CD players, radios and other electrical devices away
from pools or nearby wet surfaces.
Do not allow anyone who has been drinking alcohol to use
the pool.
Do not go swimming immediately after eating.
Stay away from the pool during periods of inclement weather;
you should never be near the water in a lightning storm.
Never dive into a shallow pool (less than 5 feet.) Keep clear
of the area near a diving board or slide.
Make sure all pool equipment is well maintained and in good
working (mechanical) condition.
Have a qualified technician, repairman,
or electrician inspect any pool aspect of your pool or equipment
that may not be working properly including pool lights, heaters,
and pumps.
Pools should be checked regularly to ensure water conditions
are optimal for swimming including Chlorine levels, PH, and
other conditions.
